Moderna (MRNA) Stock Hits 52-Week Highs After Q3 Earnings: Buy, Hold, or Sell?

Key Takeaways

  • Moderna's Q3 earnings crushed expectations, driven by stronger vaccine sales and improved profitability.
  • MRNA has surged over 700% YTD, reflecting optimism for its cancer vaccine pipeline and improving outlook.
  • Moderna's elevated valuation raises concerns, making a sharp pullback a potentially better buying opportunity.

Moderna (MRNA - Free Report) ) stock has surged as much as 10% in Friday's trading session, reaching a fresh 52-week high of $267 a share after the biotechnology giant delivered much stronger-than-expected Q3 results.

The rally comes as investors increasingly gravitate toward healthcare stocks for defensive safety amid the broader technology selloff, with industry giants AbbVie (ABBV - Free Report) ) and Eli Lilly (LLY - Free Report) ) recently reaching new highs as well.

However, with Moderna stock extending an extraordinary year-to-date rally of nearly 800%, investors may be wondering whether to chase the momentum or await a more attractive entry point.

Much of MRNA's remarkable surge has been fueled by positive Phase 3 melanoma trial results for its personalized cancer vaccine being developed with Merck (MRK - Free Report) ), alongside improving financial performance and optimism surrounding its expanding vaccine portfolio.

Moderna's Q3 Earnings Crush Expectations

Moderna reported Q3 earnings of $0.38 per share, crushing expectations that called for a loss of $1.10 per share by 134% and reversing a loss of $0.51 in the year-ago quarter.

Quarterly revenue jumped 29% year over year to $1.31 billion, comfortably surpassing estimates of $889 million. Growth was primarily driven by stronger international COVID-19 vaccine sales, supported by long-term government supply agreements.

Encouragingly, Moderna generated $162 million in net income compared with a $200 million loss a year earlier, aided by a 27% reduction in research and development (R&D) expenses.

Moderna Provides Upbeat Guidance

Adding to the optimism, Moderna raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth outlook to 15%-25%, up from its previous forecast of up to 10% growth and ahead of Wall Street’s  expectations of $2.1 billion in annual sales or 8% growth (Current Year Below).

Management also lowered its R&D spending outlook to approximately $2.7 billion from $2.9 billion.

Moderna's Valuation Raises Concerns After Massive Rally

Despite its impressive operating improvements, Moderna's valuation presents significant risks following its extraordinary YTD rally.

To that point, MRNA commands a market capitalization exceeding $100 billion and trades near 40X forward sales, an exceptionally rich premium for a biotechnology company still working toward sustainable profitability.

With Moderna remaining unprofitable over the last 12 months, traditional forward P/E comparisons are less useful, making its elevated price-to-sales multiple particularly concerning.

While the company's expanding pipeline offers substantial long-term potential, much of that optimism may already be reflected in its stock price.

Bottom Line: Buy, Hold, or Sell MRNA?

Moderna currently lands a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), suggesting investors may want to avoid chasing the post-earnings spike despite the company's impressive Q3 results and improved outlook.

With MRNA extending its massive year-to-date rally, better buying opportunities could certainly be ahead. However, Moderna stock could become an ideal buy-the-dip target on a sharp pullback, particularly if its improving fundamentals and promising pipeline remain intact.
